Jana Stoudemire – Beyond the ISS: The World’s First Commercial Space Station – New markets in LEO including pharmaceutical & technology products
The International Space Station (ISS) has been continuously inhabited since 2000 and is one of the most significant engineering achievements in the last 20 years. In the next decade, Axiom Space, a private sector commercial company, will construct a state-of-the-art successor to the ISS, the world’s first commercial space station. The first module scheduled to dock to the ISS in 2024 will contain living quarters and dedicated volume for research applications. The second and third modules will follow and will expand both the crew quarters and research and manufacturing capacity. Finally, the power and thermal tower will be added allowing the complex to operate as an independent, free-flying commercial space station – the beginnings of a ‘city in space’ built around new markets in LEO including innovative biomedical, pharmaceutical, and technology products.
Hiroaki Tanaka – The advantages of protein crystallization in space
Confocal Science Inc. (CS) has been developing technologies and providing experimental services for protein crystal growth in space for more than 25 years. Advantages reported in space are: (1) improvement of maximum resolution, (2) suppression of cluster-like formation, (3) improvement of mosaicity, and (4) reduction of twinning fraction. Better quality crystals grow in space with high probability. Technologies for crystallization in space are improving to bring more contribution to the X-ray and Neutron structural analysis in the future.
